Homeowners, Is Spring the Best Time to Paint Your Exterior in Marin, Sonoma, and Napa?

If you live in Marin, Sonoma, or Napa, you know that our seasons don’t follow the usual patterns. We don’t have brutal East Coast winters or the extreme humidity of the South. But when it comes to exterior painting, timing still matters—a lot.

So, is spring really the best time to paint your house in the North Bay? The short answer: It could be, but not always. Let’s break down the best (and worst) seasons for an exterior paint job based on local climate conditions.

Spring: The Perfect Time To Start

Spring is one of the best seasons to refresh your home’s exterior, and in Marin, Sonoma, and Napa mild temperatures allow for ideal painting conditions while longer daylight hours and lower humidity help paint dry and cure properly, setting your home up for a lasting finish. Yes, occasional spring showers can happen, but our team is experienced in planning around them to keep projects on track.

Schedules fill up fast, so now is the time to book your exterior painting project and get a head start before the busy summer season.

Summer: Pretty Good, But Not The Best

Extreme heat can be a concern. In Sonoma and Napa, summer temperatures can soar past 100°F, making midday painting impractical. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to paint. Meanwhile, in Marin, coastal fog is common, meaning painters must wait for the mist to clear before getting started.

Fall: An Underrated Season for Painting

Early fall—particularly September and October—offers some of the best painting conditions of the year. The weather is warm but not too hot, rain is less frequent than in spring, and temperatures remain steady. These factors allow for excellent paint adhesion and curing.

The only downside? Shorter daylight hours. With the sun setting earlier, painters have fewer working hours, which can extend project timelines. However, if you missed the summer window, early fall is a fantastic alternative.

Winter: Rarely Ideal, But Occasionally Possible

Winter is typically the least favorable season for exterior painting in the North Bay. Rain is frequent, temperatures drop, and the days are short. Cold weather slows drying times, and moisture can interfere with paint adhesion, leading to potential issues down the line.

That said, if we experience an unusually dry December or January, smaller touch-up projects might be feasible. However, full exterior repaints are best scheduled for another season.

Choosing the Best Time for Your Home

The ideal painting season depends on more than just the calendar. Factors like shade, wind exposure, and the current condition of your home’s paint all play a role.

If you’re considering an exterior paint job this spring or coming summer, planning ahead is essential. A professional painting team—like ours at Kunst Painting—can evaluate your home’s unique conditions and recommend the best timeline for long-lasting, high-quality results.
